All students will have the choice of doing remote learning or attending school in person. The deadline for parents choosing to have their children participate in the Angleton ISD Remote Learning Program for the start of the school year is August 5, 2020.
- Unless a student is receiving in-building instruction or participating in approved extracurricular activities, then he/she shall not be on AISD campuses unless principal approval is given.
- AISD will use the Asynchronous Instruction Format as defined by the TEA for all remote learning. Remote Asynchronous Instruction does not require having the instructor and student engaged at the same time. In this method, students learn from instruction that is not necessarily being delivered in-person or in real time. This type of instruction may include various forms of digital and online learning.
- Any student who chooses asynchronous instruction shall be expected to engage in learning activities daily. Students participating in remote learning shall be expected to complete a minimum of 4 hours of learning time per day.
- Each Kindergarten-12th grade student in Angleton ISD will be assigned a Chromebook.
- Students in grades K-2 will use the same device daily, and devices will not be shared. K-2 students will not take devices home after school unless specific directions are given by the school to do so.
- Students in grades 3-12 will have a device that they carry with them at all times, including after school. Schools shall have the ability to limit students taking devices home after school.
5.1 Attendance for Remote Learning
Under our approved online learning plan, students earn daily attendance through daily engagement measure(s). The TEA approved engagement methods are as follows:
- Students will show daily progress in approved AISD Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Edgenuity/Google Classroom;
- Students will show daily progress via teacher-student interactions;
- Students will demonstrate completion/submission of assignments from student to teacher.
- Engaged is defined as meeting any of the three above mentioned methods.
- If students fail to meet daily online learning attendance guidelines, they shall be counted absent.
- All AISD attendance guidelines shall be followed, including the 90% attendance guidelines for course credit and all truancy guidelines.
- To make the most of his or her education, regular school attendance is essential for a student to benefit from teacher-led and school activities, to build each day’s learning on the previous day’s, and to grow as an individual. Absences from class may result in serious disruption of a student’s mastery of the instructional materials; therefore, the student and parent should make every effort to avoid unnecessary absences. Two state laws--one dealing with the required presence of school-aged children in school (e.g., compulsory attendance) and the other dealing with how a student’s attendance affects the award of a student’s final grade or course credit--are of special interest to students and parents.
5.1a Compulsory Attendance
- Students enrolled in prekindergarten or kindergarten are required to attend school and are subject to the compulsory attendance requirements as long as they remain enrolled.
- State law requires that a student between the ages of 6 and 19 attend school, as well as any applicable accelerated instruction program, extended year program, or tutorial session, unless the student is otherwise excused from attendance or legally exempt.
- State law requires attendance in an accelerated reading instruction program when kindergarten, first grade, or second grade students are assigned to such a program. Parents will be notified in writing if their child is assigned to an accelerated reading instruction program as a result of a diagnostic reading instrument. A student will be required to attend any assigned accelerated instruction program, which may occur before or after school or during the summer, if the student does not meet the passing standards on the state assessment for his or her grade level and/or applicable subject area.
- A student who voluntarily attends or enrolls after his or her 19th birthday is required to attend each school day until the end of the school year. If a student age 19 or older has more than five unexcused absences in a semester, the district may revoke the student’s enrollment. The student’s presence on school property thereafter would be unauthorized and may be considered trespassing.
5.1b Failure to Comply with Compulsory Attendance
- When a student between ages 6 and 19 incurs unexcused absences for three or more days or parts of days within a four-week period, the school will send a notice to the student’s parent, as required by law, to remind the parent that it is the parent’s duty to monitor the student’s attendance and to require the student to come to school. The notice will also inform the parent that the district will initiate truancy prevention measures and request a conference between school administrators and the parent. These measures will include a behavior improvement plan, school-based community service, or referrals to either in-school or out-of-school counseling or other social services. Any other measures considered appropriate by the district will also be initiated.
- If you have questions about your student and the effect of his or her absences from school, please contact the facilitator or any other campus administrator.
- A court of law may also impose penalties against a student’s parent if a school-aged student is deliberately not attending school. A complaint against the parent may be filed in court if the student is absent without excuse from school on ten or more days or parts of days within a six-month period in the same school year.
- If a student ages 12–18 incurs unexcused absences on ten or more days or parts of days within a six-month period in the same school year, the district, in most circumstances, will refer the student to truancy court.
5.1c Attendance for Credit or Final Grade
- To receive credit or a final grade in a class, a student in kindergarten–grade 12 must attend at least 90 percent of the days the class is offered. A student who attends at least 75 percent but fewer than 90 percent of the days the class is offered may receive credit or a final grade for the class if he or she completes a plan, approved by the principal, who allows the student to fulfill the instructional requirements for the class. If a student is involved in a criminal or juvenile court proceeding, the approval of the judge presiding over the case will also be required before the student receives credit or a final grade for the class.
- If a student attends less than 75 percent of the days a class is offered or has not completed the plan approved by the principal, then the student will be referred to the attendance review committee to determine whether there are extenuating circumstances for the absences and how the student can regain credit or a final grade lost because of absences.
- All absences, whether excused or unexcused, must be considered in determining whether a student has attended the required percentage of days. In determining whether there were extenuating circumstances for the absences, the attendance committee will use the following guidelines:
- If makeup work is completed, absences for the reasons listed above at Exemptions to Compulsory Attendance will be considered extenuating circumstances for purposes of attendance for credit or the award of a final grade.
- A transfer or migrant student begins to accumulate absences only after he or she has enrolled in the district.
- In reaching a decision about a student’s absences, the committee will attempt to ensure that it is in the best interest of the student.
- The committee will review absences incurred based on the student’s participation in board-approved extracurricular activities. These absences will be considered by the attendance committee as extenuating circumstances in accordance with the absences allowed under FM(LOCAL) if the student made up the work missed in each class. The committee will consider the acceptability and authenticity of documented reasons for the student’s absences. The committee will consider whether the absences were for reasons over which the student or the student’s parent could exercise any control.
- The committee will consider the extent to which the student has completed all assignments, mastered the essential knowledge and skills, and maintained passing grades in the course or subject.
- The student or parent will be given an opportunity to present any information to the committee about the absences and to talk about ways to earn or regain credit or a final grade.
- The student or parent may appeal the committee’s decision to the board by following policy FNG(LOCAL).
- The actual number of days a student must be in attendance to receive credit or a final grade will depend on whether the class is for a full semester or for a full year.
5.2 Grading Guidelines
All AISD grading guidelines shall be followed by both in-school and online learning students. The assigning of grades and grade points shall be the same for both on-campus and online learning. The grading guidelines are as follows:
5.2a Minimum number of grades:
- Pre-K through 12th Grade Core Content
Teachers are required to record in Skyward a MINIMUM of two (2) DAILY GRADES weekly and one (1) MAJOR GRADE every three (3) weeks of the quarter for each core class.
- Pre-K through 5th Grade Enrichment
PE and Music teachers will assign students a nine weeks participation grade only. Participation will be based on student interaction and engagement with digital content, and students should be assigned at least one participation grade a week.
- 9-8 active weekly engagements = E
- 6-7 active weekly engagements = S
- 5-4 active weekly engagements = N
- 3 or less active weekly engagements = U
- 6th through 12th Grade Enrichment
Teachers are required to record in Skyward a MINIMUM of two (2) DAILY GRADES weekly and one (1) MAJOR GRADE every nine weeks of the school year for each enrichment class.
5.2b Make-up work
Schools will announce more defined Makeup and Late work guidance for the 2020/2021 school year by November 1, 2020. This guidance will be for the remaining 2020/2021 school year.
5.2c Grading Categories and Weights
- MAJOR GRADES = 40%
- Long-term projects
- DAILY GRADES = 60%
- eLearning/Google Classroom Interactive discussion and classroom participation
- eLearning/Google Classroom
- No single assignment or assessment may count more than 20% of a student’s grade.
5.2d Independent Work
- Students are required to complete all assignments that are posted each week.
- Students may work at their own pace but are still required for meeting minimum attendance requirements for the course. All independent work will be at a level that can be done independently by the student, and the student should clearly understand the expectations of the assignment.
5.2e Posting of Grades
- Assignments and assessments should be graded and posted in the Skyward electronic grade book in a timely manner so that students are receiving appropriate feedback and parents are able to access accurate information.
- Assignments and tests should be graded, posted, and made available to students within 72 hours. Teachers are expected to update their electronic grade books by 4:00 pm each Tuesday of the following week.
- A teacher has the discretion to drop grades, as long as it is consistently and fairly applied and documented. The minimum number of grades per quarter must be maintained.
5.2f Student Progress and Grade Reporting
- Teachers will provide a progress report for each student according to the grading calendar published each year. Report Cards and Progress Reports will be sent home via the district timeline.
- Parent Conferences: All teachers will make a good faith effort to conference with parents of students experiencing academic difficulty at each progress reporting period. A good faith effort is defined as multiple attempts using multiple modalities (call, email, personal contact, etc.). All attempts should be documented.

5.3 Other Remote Learning Guidelines
- If a student chooses to change from online learning to on-campus learning, then a wait period of up to 5 days shall be put in place at the attending schools discretion.
- AISD may require students who are being served through online learning to attend a campus to complete assignments for certain elective courses.
- Students who do not have reliable internet connectivity at their home may be required to attend on-campus school.
- AISD may have internet connectivity hotspots to help students without reliable internet connectivity. However, these hotspots may not work in all areas of the AISD attendance boundaries.
