For the safety of everyone, staff, students and visitors will wear masks. We will allow a few mask breaks throughout the day where we will ensure social distancing.

Bus transportation will be available to eligible riders. Students will have their temperatures taken prior to boarding the bus, and masks will be worn. We are encouraging parents to drop off and pick up their children if possible. A FastPass will be provided by the AISD Transportation Department for bus riders.

If children have fever when they enter the building or become sick throughout the day, they will be secluded in a classroom and monitored by a staff member until the parents/guardians arrive to pick them up.

For safety reasons, parents will not be permitted to walk children into the building on the first day of school. This procedure will remain in place throughout the school year.

Bus Riders - We will begin unloading buses at 7:00 a.m. at the front office entry. Students will wait on markers that indicate proper social distancing before entering the building where they will have their temperatures taken and be given hand sanitizer. Students will be supervised in the cafeteria where they will be seated six feet apart until 7:20 a.m. At 7:20 a.m., teachers will escort students to classrooms while maintaining social distancing.

Car Riders - We will begin unloading cars at 7:15 a.m. In the morning, we use the right lane only in the car rider lane. We ask parents not to allow children to exit the car onto the porch without a staff member on duty. Students will enter the building where they will have their temperatures taken and be given hand sanitizer. Students will be supervised in the hallway where they will be seated on social distance markers until 7:20 a.m. At 7:20 a.m., teachers will escort students to classrooms while maintaining social distancing.

Walkers and Bike Riders - We ask that all walkers and bike riders plan to arrive no earlier than 7:25 a.m. to prevent congestion at the front office entry where bus riders also enter the building. Upon entry, students will have their temperatures taken and be given hand sanitizer.

The morning bell will ring at 7:30 a.m. for morning announcements, and instruction will begin at 7:40 am. Students will be marked tardy at 7:40 a.m.

Parents will not be able to walk their children in on the first day. There will be staff to assist children to their classrooms. We still want to celebrate everyone’s first day of school! Please send a picture of their first day of Online Learning to Southside Elementary Facebook Messenger, and we will highlight our students on Facebook!

There will be no visitors permitted on campus unless they have a scheduled meeting. All visitors will be asked to wear masks, take their temperatures, and sanitize their hands. Receptionists will help parents who need to check out a child throughout the school day. All visitors will wait for their child in the security vestibule area. For safety reasons, “outside” deliveries will not be allowed, and parents will not be able to bring outside food to the school. This includes birthday cupcakes/cookies/treats.

All students will be provided with the option to eat a free breakfast in their classrooms this year.

Teachers have set up classrooms so that students will be socially distanced. Students will have opportunities for small group instruction and group work throughout the day as long as masks are worn. Students will not share supplies or work areas. Classrooms will be sanitized throughout the day by the teacher and on a schedule by the custodial staff.

School supply lists are posted on the AISD website. Students are asked to bring their own supplies as sharing will not be an option this year. Because parents are not able to walk their children in on the first day, they may put the school supplies in the students’ backpacks. If students have too much to carry in their backpacks the first day, parents can send a few items daily.

There will be signage and social distancing markers throughout the building to remind students and staff of safe practices.

Teachers will take their classes on scheduled restroom breaks for handwashing. Students will also be able to go individually in cases of emergency. Only three children will be allowed in the restroom at a time. Every child will have his/her own personal restroom pass that will be used if he/she needs to go during class time. Students will hang their restroom pass outside the restroom door. We will teach students that if there are already three passes hanging outside the restrooms, then they will have to wait. We have social distancing markers on the floor for students to wait their turn for the restroom. The students will be given hand sanitizer throughout the day.

Students will not be permitted to drink directly from the water fountains. We ask that parents send a water bottle daily that can be refilled. The water bottle needs to be washed and sent back daily.

Students will participate in electives daily. During electives, students will remain in their classrooms for music and library to avoid congested hallway transitions. The librarian will have a selection of books for students to check out. Weather permitting, the P.E. coach will teach class outdoors where students will remain socially distanced; otherwise, the coach will escort students to and from the gym where they will remain socially distanced for activities. During P.E., students will be allowed a mask break.

Students will have a scheduled recess during the day. The students will play with their class on an assigned playground. We will allow students mask breaks when they are outside as long as social distancing is possible. If it rains, students will participate in indoor recess, which will consist of body movement activities provided by the teacher. Students will be given hand sanitizer when they go to recess and when they come back in from recess.

All students will eat in classrooms. All students will receive a free lunch. Parents may send a lunch kit (packed lunch) with their child. No lunch deliveries will be accepted, and we will not allow lunch visitors.

Dismissal will be at 3:20 p.m. Walkers, bike riders, Boys and Girls Club members, and daycare riders will be escorted to the cafeteria exit while maintaining social distancing. Car riders and bus riders will remain in classrooms until their car or bus arrives.

Car Riders - Parents must display the Southside car rider tag in the car window. These tags will be available during Chromebook distribution. For our students’ safety, we will only load students into cars displaying the Southside car rider tag. Homemade tags will not be accepted. When a student’s car arrives, the teacher will send the student from the classroom to exit at the car rider porch where staff will be on duty to assist students into their vehicles.

Bus Riders - When a bus arrives, students will be monitored in socially distanced lines as they move through the building and exit at the front office to load busses. Duty personnel will be on hand to maintain social distancing.

Picking Up Students from the Office - To avoid congestion in our vestibule area, no student will be dismissed from the front office for parent pick-up between 3:00 - 3:30 p.m. to allow for bus riders to safely exit the building and load onto busses.

All safety drills will continue to be practiced throughout the school year. Fire drills and severe weather drills will be practiced one grade level at a time to maintain social distancing and prevent congested hallways. Lock down drills and shelter-in-place drills will be practiced schoolwide. Students will remain in classrooms.

For safety reasons, we will not have an in-person Meet-the-Teacher evening. Teachers will contact parents on August 13 by phone to “meet” and ensure everyone is ready to begin online learning on August 17.

Students will have the opportunity to take fall pictures. Students will maintain social distancing as they are escorted in a line and wait for their picture to be taken. Fall picture information will be shared electronically with our Online Learning students’ families a week in advance of picture day. If interested, families of Online Learning students may call to set an appointment to bring in their children for pictures. Upon arrival, the parent and child will have their temperatures taken. The parent will wait in the vestibule while the child is escorted to have his/her picture taken.

Parents may request to change a student’s learning model, and those requests will be processed according to the following timelines:

Initial request to go from Online Learning to On-Campus Learning will be processed within 5 days. Those students who make multiple requests to change from Online Learning to On-Campus Learning will be required to wait until the end of the nine-week grading period.

Requests to change from On-Campus Learning to Online Learning will be processed within 1 school day.

If there is a positive COVID-19 case or if someone has COVID-19 symptoms at a campus, the campus will send a letter home with the students. If a child has come in close contact with the infected or possibly infected individual, the parent will receive a direct call from the campus. Due to privacy laws and rules, we cannot identify the person, student or staff, who has tested positive or who has symptoms. We will initiate our COVID-19 sanitizing and disinfecting protocols for the campus, and we urge you to continue to talk with your child about the proper safety precautions he or she can take while at school. We will continue to participate and encourage best safety practices at school, which include washing hands, use of hand sanitizer, wearing masks and/or face shields, and social distancing. If you have questions, please contact your child’s principal.

Parents need to make sure they keep contact information in Skyward updated. There exists a possibility that we may need to have a classroom, a campus, or the entire school district resume Online Learning for an extended period of time, and we want to make sure that we have the most updated information on file to reach parents as soon as possible.
