Central Return to School & Campus Reopening Plan

  • return to school banner
The information in the individual school reopening plan applies mostly to students who will participate in On-Campus Learning.

For the safety of everyone, masks will be worn by staff, students and visitors. We will allow a few mask breaks throughout the day where we will ensure social distancing.

Bus transportation will be available to eligible riders. Students will have their temperatures taken prior to boarding the bus, and masks will be worn. We are encouraging parents to drop off and pick up their children if possible. A FastPass will be provided by the AISD Transportation Department for bus riders.

If children have fever when they enter the building or become sick throughout the day, they will be secluded in a classroom and monitored by a staff member until the parents/guardians arrive to pick them up.

Car riders - We will begin unloading cars at 7:15 am. Students may not exit their cars without a staff member on duty. Students will enter the building and have their temperatures taken and be given hand sanitizer. The morning bell will ring at 7:35 am, and instruction will begin at 7:40 am. Children will be counted tardy at 7:40 am.

Bus riders - We will begin unloading buses at 7:00 am. Students will enter the building and have their temperatures taken and will be given hand sanitizer.

All students will get a “grab-and-go” breakfast and eat in their classrooms. Students will be socially distanced in the building during arrival time.

Parents will not be able to walk their children in on the first day. There will be staff to assist children to their classrooms. We still want to celebrate the first day of school, so parents are encouraged to send a picture of the first day of Online Learning to the Central Elementary Facebook Messenger, and we will highlight our students on Facebook.

There will be no visitors permitted on campus unless there is a scheduled meeting. Receptionists will assist parents who need to check out children during the school day. All visitors will be asked to wear masks, take their temperatures, and sanitize their hands. All visitors will wait for their children in the security vestibule area. For safety reasons, “outside” food deliveries will not be allowed, and parents will not be able to bring outside food to the schools.  This includes birthday cupcakes/cookies/treats.

All students will be provided with the option of eating a free breakfast in their classrooms this year.

Teachers have set up classrooms so the students will be socially distanced. Students will have opportunities for small group instruction and group work throughout the day as long as masks are worn. Students will not share supplies or work areas. Classrooms will be sanitized throughout the day by the teacher and on a schedule by the custodial staff.

School supply lists are posted on the AISD website. Students are asked to bring their own supplies as sharing will not be an option this year. Because parents will not be able to walk their children in on the first day, parents may put school supplies in students’ backpacks. If they have too much to carry in their backpack the first day, parents can send a few items daily.

There will be signage and markings that indicate social distancing throughout the building.

Teachers will take scheduled restroom breaks with their classes for handwashing. Students will also be able to go individually in cases of emergency. Only three children will be allowed in the restroom at a time. Every child will have his/her own personal restroom pass that will be used if he/she needs to go during class time. Students will hang their restroom pass outside the restroom door. We will teach students if there are already three passes hanging outside the restrooms that they will need to wait. We will have designated spots in the hallway that are socially distantanced for the students to wait for their turn to use the restroom. Students will be given hand sanitizer throughout the day.

Students will not be permitted to drink directly from the water fountains. We ask that parents send a water bottle daily that can be refilled. The water bottle needs to be washed and sent back daily.

Students will participate in electives daily. The PE/Music/Library/Computer teachers will ensure supplies are sanitized between classes. Students will be allowed a “mask break” if they are able to socially distance during elective time. The PE teacher might take students outside if weather permits. Students will be given hand sanitizer when they enter their elective classes and when they leave their elective classes.

Students will have a scheduled recess during the day. The students will play with their class on an assigned area of the playground. We will allow the children to take off their masks when they are outside as long as social distancing is possible. If it rains, students will participate in “indoor recess,” which will consist of body movement activities provided by the teacher. Students will be given hand sanitizer when they go out to recess and when they come back in from recess.

All students will eat in classrooms. Students will all receive a free lunch. Parents may send a lunch kit with children. No lunch deliveries will be accepted, and we will not allow lunch visitors.

Dismissal will be at 3:20 pm. All students will be socially distanced as they move throughout the building to their dismissal destination. We will have car rider tags for parents/guardians to display in cars to help expedite the loading process. We ask for patience at the beginning of the year because we know we will have a lot more car riders than normal. Once everyone learns the procedures, the car rider line will get smoother and faster.

All safety drills will continue to be practiced throughout the school year. Fire drills and severe weather drills will be practiced one grade level at a time to maintain social distancing and prevent congested hallways. Lockdown drills and shelter-in-place drills will be practiced schoolwide. Students will remain in classrooms.

Teachers will contact parents by phone on August 13th to ensure everyone is set up and ready to begin online learning on August 17th. Teachers will set meetings digitally with parents to assist in anything they might need on August 13th and 14th.

Students will have the opportunity to take fall pictures. Students will maintain social distancing as they are escorted in a line and wait for their picture to be taken. Fall picture information will be shared electronically with our online students’ families a week in advance of picture day. If interested, families of Online Learning students may call to set an appointment to bring in their children for pictures. Upon arrival, the parent and child will have their temperatures taken. The parent will wait in the vestibule while the child is escorted to have his/her picture taken.

Parents may request to change a student’s learning model, and those requests will be processed according to the following timelines:

Initial request to go from Online Learning to On-Campus Learning will be processed within 5 days. Those students who make multiple requests to change from Online Learning to On-Campus Learning will be required to wait until the end of the nine-week grading period.

Requests to change from On-Campus Learning to Online Learning will be processed within 1 school day.

If there is a positive COVID-19 case or if someone has COVID-19 symptoms at a campus, the campus will send a letter home with the students. If a child has come in close contact with the infected or possibly infected individual, the parent will receive a direct call from the campus.

Due to privacy laws and rules, we cannot identify the person, student or staff, who has tested positive or who has symptoms. We will initiate our COVID-19 sanitizing and disinfecting protocols for the campus, and we urge you to continue to talk with your child about the proper safety precautions he or she can take while at school.

We will continue to participate and encourage best safety practices at school, which include washing hands, use of hand sanitizer, wearing masks and/or face shields, and social distancing. If you have questions, please contact your child’s principal.

Parents need to make sure they keep their contact information in Skyward updated. There exists a possibility that we may need to have a classroom, a campus, or the entire school district resume Online Learning for an extended period of time, and we want to make sure that we have the most updated information on file to reach parents as soon as possible.
