Setting Their Own PACE
In an effort to expand on its goal to make sure every student is given the best individualized educational experience possible, Angleton ISD will open a new graduating pathway next school year — Angleton High School - PACE Academy.
AISD has created PACE, which stands for Personalized Accelerated Choices in Education, as a school of choice to help students who would benefit from alternative, individual learning plans.
PACE Principal Colleen Tribble says that PACE is designed for Angleton High School students who are seeking a more flexible learning environment.
"Our goal is to meet the unique learning needs of all Wildcats,” she said. “The PACE Academy will further this goal by supplementing the programs already available at AHS.”
AISD administration says PACE will supplement the credit recovery already being done at AHS by offering a more intense nine-week learning program through Edgenuity online coursework and teacher-directed activities.
PACE will offer morning and afternoon sessions and will accept up 60 students in the first year, with 30 students in each half-day group. The morning sessions will meet from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., and the afternoon group will meet from 11:40 a.m. - 3:40 p.m. The school district will also offer an optional lunch to both groups at 11:40 a.m.
Starting Monday, March 25, applications will be open to any student. Students must be enrolled in AISD before they can apply and students must go through the AHS counselors’ office to get an application. Once students are admitted to PACE, they will remain in it until completion (graduation) unless they are not doing what is required of them or benefiting from the program.
Students will be considered for admittance into PACE on a case-by-case basis. An application review committee will look at several factors, including a student’s transcript, behavior and attendance.
PACE students will graduate with their AHS class in May, but they cannot graduate as an honor graduate (in top 10 percent). PACE students can also attend after-school events like prom and events as fans, but they cannot be members of extra-curricular organizations at AHS.
“The PACE Academy is meant to encourage our students who need a boost from a different educational environment to meet expectations and graduate,” AISD Superintendent Phil Edwards said. “We will be able to offer even more individualized and smaller learning groups to help our PACE students find success and pathways to become productive members of society.”
Each student who is accepted will participate in creating an individual learning plan (ILP) outlining a personalized schedule of online and face-to-face courses designed to help him or her meet learning and graduation goals. PACE students must be willing and able to work independently online and will sign and abide by a contract outlining behavior, attendance and academic expectations.
When PACE students finish their graduation requirements, they will be withdrawn from school but will walk at graduation with their AHS class in May. As students finish the program and are withdrawn, new spots will become available and the Academy will consider applicants who were not previously admitted. The Academy will accept new applications prior to the end of each nine-week period.
The district encourages all interested AHS students to apply even if they are unsure if they will be accepted. Applicants who are not immediately accepted may be considered for future openings.
PACE students will be enrolled in AHS but attend classes at PACE Academy, located at 300 S. Walker Street. If students are interested in applying for the PACE Academy for the 2019-2020 school year, they need to visit the AHS counselors’ office to pick up an application. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 12. The district will communicate admission decisions by Friday, April 26.
