UPDATE – Junior High Dance Incident
Tuesday, September 10, 2019
We wanted to provide an update about the incidents at the junior high’s school dance on Friday.
District administrators and AISD Police have reviewed the school video from Friday and conducted several interviews with students to determine the timeline of events that occurred. At this point, we can release that multiple students have been disciplined for their behavior at Friday’s dance.
Also, the district is continuing to investigate our administrative procedures and actions regarding this incident. We will use this situation to grow and improve so that students can be safe at school.
We apologize again for the events that occurred on Friday. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us.
I would like to address the issues at the junior high dance on Friday. First, I want to apologize for the experience becoming a negative one as opposed to the positive and memorable event it should have been. We realize that the vast majority of our AJH students were behaving appropriately, and it upsets me that the dance turned into a distressing situation for our students.
I want you to know that we are investigating the situation. We are investigating the student discipline issues as well as our administrative procedures and actions in this circumstance, including the timeliness of communication with parents. I can assure you that we will be taking appropriate action to hold the students who are responsible accountable for their actions, and we are immediately reviewing our event procedures, including event dismissal. We will communicate with parents, staff, school board and the community about any changes to those procedures.
I want you to know that we will not tolerate fighting or acts of assault and that we will put measures in place that correct our procedures and actions in handling events and situations such as this.
As for the incident on Friday, to our knowledge no student was knocked unconscious, and no ambulance was called to take a student to the hospital. We do know that the parents of one student, who left the dance, sought medical treatment afterward and that the student was released. We are not aware of any other students still needing medical treatment.
As for the rumor of a student bringing a weapon to school today, we have investigated it and found it to be untrue. We take every report such as this seriously and immediately investigate, whether we believe it to be a rumor or not.
We ask that you continue to contact us if you do hear or see something suspicious or concerning so that we can investigate it for our students’ safety, and please contact us if you have questions. Sometimes information that circulates within the community may not be accurate.
Again, I apologize for the events that transpired Friday evening. We take student safety very seriously and will continue to work towards keeping our students as safe as possible when you leave them in our care.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact my office.
