Courage

March has arrived, and with it comes a powerful new focus for our classrooms and hallways. This month, our school is diving deep into the Capturing Kids’ Hearts® lead-worthy characteristic of Courage.

While we often think of courage as a trait reserved for superheroes, we are teaching our students that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the willingness to act even when you feel it. It’s about finding the strength to face challenges, stand up for what is right, and embrace the "new" even when it feels a little uncertain.

What Courage Looks Like in Our School

Courage isn't always a grand gesture; more often, it’s found in the small, daily choices our students make. This month, teachers and staff are looking for Actionable Behaviors that show our students are leading with heart:

  • Standing Up for Others: Having the bravery to be an upstander when they see someone being treated unfairly.

  • Trying New Things: Whether it’s a difficult math concept, a new sport, or a different instrument in band, our students are stepping out of their comfort zones.

  • Participating in Class: Raising a hand to share an idea or ask a question takes real guts, and we are celebrating that vulnerability.

Why It Matters

By focusing on Courage, we are helping students build a foundation of self-confidence and resilience. When a student learns to navigate uncomfortable situations today, they develop the skills necessary to overcome the larger obstacles they will face tomorrow.

For our teachers, this month is about creating a "safe-to-fail" environment where students know that taking a risk is more important than being perfect.

"Courage is like a muscle. We strengthen it by using it."

Bringing Courage Home

We encourage parents and community members to join us in this mission! You can support your child’s growth by:

  1. Modeling Vulnerability: Share a time you were nervous to try something new at work or in life.

  2. Validating Feelings: Acknowledge that being scared is okay, but emphasize the power of taking that first step anyway.

  3. Celebrating "Brave Starts": Focus more on the courage it took to start something than the final result.

Together, we are building a culture where every student feels empowered to lead with heart and face the world with confidence.
