What is MAP Growth?
MAP® Growth™ is a test your child takes on a computer that helps teachers understand what they know right now and what they’re ready to learn next. Unlike many tests that measure what students already learned in school, MAP Growth adapts to each student’s level so every child gets a fair chance to show what they can do.
How does it work?
The test starts with questions that are right for your child’s grade.
If they answer correctly, the questions get harder.
If they answer incorrectly, the questions get easier.
This way, the test finds the "just-right" level for your child.
What does MAP Growth measure?
MAP Growth measures achievement and growth in subjects:
Reading/Language
Math
Science
It gives students an RIT score and provides teachers with data to help guide instruction.
What do MAP Growth scores mean?
Your child will receive an RIT score, which is like a ruler that shows their learning level.
Teachers use this score to see where your child is and to track progress over time.
The focus is on growth, how much they improve from one test to the next, not just their score at one point in time.
How is MAP Growth used in school?
Teachers use MAP Growth results to:
Group students for instruction
Identify strengths and areas for improvement
Set learning goals
Monitor progress throughout the year
Schools also use the data to see how all students are growing.
How can families support at home?
Talk with your child about setting goals and celebrating growth.
Ask teachers how you can reinforce learning at home.
Remember: The test is just one piece of the puzzle—it doesn’t define your child, but it does help teachers support them.
