It was recently brought to the Angleton ISD administration’s attention that the song "Dixie" was being taught in some of our social studies classes at Angleton Junior High.
In AISD, we adhere to our district beliefs, and one of our belief statements reads, “The learning environment must be positive, genuine, caring and safe for students and staff to reach their potential.” The class activity with the song “Dixie” does not promote a learning environment that is aligned with the above-stated district belief. We recognize that the song "Dixie" is controversial and offensive to many due to its origins. Additionally, the song and the term "Dixie" have become symbols of racism, particularly in the context of the Civil Rights Movement.
The teaching of the song “Dixie” was not an appropriate educational activity. The AISD administration has issued a directive to stop the use of the activity immediately. We are confident that our teachers can introduce the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) by other means that do not involve the song "Dixie" as we continue to teach our students core lessons and skills in our social studies classes and throughout the school year.
